Chapter 1

She knew this day would come, she just hoped it wouldn't be so soon. The day he would leave her and never come back. His fear of her tore her to pieces. Her soulless body felt as if it would fall apart creating a large hole in her heart.

"Come Rayne. We'll get you something to eat." She looked up at her brother from the ground where she lay, holding herself trying to stay together.

"Darrien, what will I do? He thinks I'm a bloodsucker." He reached down to help her up.

"You will get over it and move on. You have an eternity to get over it."
She stood, motionless, her jet-black hair softly tossed by the wind to cast a shadow on her cold, pale face. A tear silently escaped her eye and streamed down her cheek. "I will never get over it. What if he tells somebody our secret?" she asked, not moving an inch. "I like it here, there isn't much sun. We can easily hide our secret here. I don't want to leave unless it's absolutely necessary. Please Darrien, you have to help me do something."

"Rayne, you know we must leave now. We cannot get him too involved with us. He's probably already too involved with us. Do you want them to come after him?" Although he was not huge, Darrien towered over Rayne. He looked down as she slightly shifted and looked up at her safeguard with pain in her black eyes. "You have not felt pain in centuries, what is making this any different?"

"You know how you feel about Samara?" He nodded. "Imagine that love being ripped away by one of them." He cringed at the thought. "That is how I feel right now."

"You are hungry, let's go eat." He grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the black Testarossa waiting on the side of the road. She followed him and got in the passenger side. "Blink, Rayne." She blinked and the pain hit her worse than ever. When she closed her eyes, even for that fraction of a second, she saw the fear in his eyes. She doubled over in pain as her brother weaved in and out of cars. "Rayne, are you ok?" he asked, panic flooding his voice as she bent over clutching her chest. She screamed in agony and fell unconscious.
