home >> SAM: Smart Access Manager
Coming early Fall 2006...
The Highland Library, working with The Library Network, our library cooperative, will be implementing Smart Access Manager (SAM) software from Comprise Technologies to manage public access workstations, including Internet sessions. SAM software will set up an automated first-available self-service sign-up system for time, print and filter management on library workstations with Internet access and Office software. To use a workstation you will type in your library card number and SAM will communicate directly with our shared SIRSI library system to verify your library account. You will be assigned a workstation, or a place on a waiting list.
Time controls include session length settings, timeout warnings, and library closing notification. The SAM system will keep track of session time, and detect current computer usage to auto-extend session lengths when the library is not busy or to manage a waiting list of patrons who have signed in for the next available workstation.
SAM will also manage print charges and page limits. Printer users may prepay their account at the circulation desk for print charges. Users can check how many pages they’re about to print and the cost of the print job before proceeding with printing. If necessary, print preview can be checked in order to limit or select pages for printing. Then the print job can be selected from the print list and released for printing.
The software will provide statistics on workstation usage while protecting patron privacy as personal identification is not saved and sessions are cleared between users. SAM management of the library’s filtering system will automate compliance with state law regarding minor’s Internet access by directing the filter to the individual, not to the workstation.
We know that this change will involve a learning curve for both public and staff, and we hope you will bear with us during the time of transition, targeted for fall. We hope to gain greater efficiency in the sign-up process and provide for more equitable access to a very popular shared resource.
