For children’s programs with limited space, preference will be given to Highland residents.  Other interested folks will be placed on a waiting list the first 3 days of registration.

Programs begin promptly, so please arrive early as a courtesy to our program providers and to the other children in the program.  Latecomers will not be admitted once storytime has begun.

 

Stroll-In Programs: Space permits strollers and little ones to attend programs with this icon.

 

Play and Chat

For babies and their caregivers.

First and Third Fridays of each month, 10 - 11am.

Meet in the Read-to-Me Room, hang out with one another, read, play puzzles, use our puppets, and enjoy each other's company.  If you're new to the area, this is a great way to meet people! This is a drop-in activity on first and third Fridays of each month.  No registration is required.

 

Getting Ready to Read

Toddler Class

For children between the ages of 18 - 35 months at time of registration.

Designed to help children with socialization, cognitive and large motor development. Each child must be accompanied by an adult. Please make other arrangements for siblings. Select either session I or II:

Session I

  Mondays, 10:30am - 11:00am

  September 20 - October 11

  Registration begins September 7.

Session II

  Mondays, 10:30am - 11:00am

  November 1 - November 22

  Registration begins October 18.

Preschool Class

For children 3 - 5 years old who are not yet in kindergarten.

Independence and reading-readiness are emphasized. Children need to be able to sit and listen to stories on their own.

Session I

  Tuesdays, 10:30am - 11:00am

  September 21 - October 12

  Registration begins September 7.

Session II

  Tuesdays, 10:30am - 11:00am

  November 2 - November 23

  Registration begins October 18.

The Runaway Garden

Thursday, October 21, 10:30am

This year's Michigan Reads selection was written by Jeffery Schatzer and illustrated by Jeffrey Ebbeler. Every child in the state is encouraged to read or hear this book, and we'll have a prize drawing for those of you who do! October 21 party is for kids 3 - 5 years.

Pinkalicious Party

Thursday, November 18, 10:30am

For kids 2 - 5 years.

Holiday Stories

Thursday, December 9, 10:30am

For kids 3 - 5 years.

Crafts, festive holiday stories, and some yummy snacks!

Registration begins November 3.

 

A Grand Adventure

Saturday, September 25, 11:00am

For kids ages 2 - 6 years, with a grandparent (or parent).

Enjoy stories and make something special for your grandparents!

Registration begins September 8.

 

The Reggio Way Education Method

Julianne Wurm, author of Working in the Reggio Way: A Beginner's Guide for American Teachers, will hold an introductory workshop for parents and educators. This method of working with young children as practiced in Italy has gained great respect in the United States. Look at your preschoolers in a new way!

Parents: Friday, October 1, 5:00 - 6:30pm

Child care will be provided by Building Blocks Preschool of Highland. Parents can register with the Library Youth Department starting September 8.

Educators: Contact Building Blocks Preschool at 248-889-2727 for information on a Reggio Way CEU opportunity to be held at the Library.

 

LEGO Fest

Wednesday, October 6, 4:30pm

For kids in K - 5th grades.

We supply the LEGOs, you supply the imagination! Creations will be displayed in the Youth Department.

Registration begins September 8.

 

Astronomy 101

Thursday, October 14, 7:30pm (extending beyond normal library hours)

For families of all ages.

Larry Halstead and members of the Ford Amateur Astronomy Club will lead a discussion and answer questions about the moon, stars, and planets. Then we'll go outside to use telescopes to view our awesome solar system!

Registration begins September 8.

 

Sensory Integration Dysfunction

Thursday, October 21, 7:15pm

Is your child impulsive, getting into trouble at school? Does he have problems with changes in routine? Is she clumsy and uncoordinated, or a picky eater? Help improve your child's success at school and at home! Brian Arrol, Registered Occupational Therapist at Kids in Motion, will explain it all. CEUs available.

Halloween Party

Saturday, October 23, 11:00am

Activities are geared toward kids 3 - 6 years, but families are welcome.

We're going to party! You're encouraged to wear your costume!

Baby Steps

Saturday, October 30, 10:30am

For babies 3 months - 18 months old.

This program includes music, songs, stories, tactile play, and exploration to help with your child's development. We'll also have lots of information for parents to go home with.

Reader's Theatre

Saturday, November 6, 2:00pm

For kids in 3rd - 6th grades.

Members of Encore Youth Theatre will perform a puppet play, teach us about voice expression, and coach us in our own plays! This program is made possible by a Target Grant.

Registration begins October 19.

 

Night Tales

Tuesday, November 9, starting at 7:00pm

Gather 'round the fireplace for stories (geared toward 3- to 5-year-olds, but all ages are welcome)!  PJs are okay (teddy bears, too).

No registration is required.

 

Cupcake Collage

Saturday, November 20, 2:00pm

For kids in 3rd - 6th grades.

Impress us with your cute creations in this cupcake-decorating program! Come imagine, create, and eat with us!

Registration begins November 3.

 

Warm & Cozy Craft

Wednesday, December 1, 4:30pm

For kids 3 years through 5th grade.

Check the display case in November for details of this fun craft!

39 Clues Party

Tuesday, December 21, 11:00am

For kids in 3rd - 6th grades.

Follow the clues, treasure hunters!

We'll delve into the mysterious world of the 39 clues at this fun party.

School's Out Matinee

Wednesday, December 29 at 2:30pm

For families of all ages.

Join us for a family-appropriate movie and enjoy a treat on us!
