Archie's War : My Scrapbook of the First World War 1914-1918 Archie Albright Archie is 10 years old and living in London with his family when the First World War breaks out. This is his "diary" that spans the war and it is chock-full of cartoons, postcards from relatives, and bits of fluff. A three-dimensional feel (letters that fold out from the page) and a haphazard approach (lots of extras in the margins such as newspaper clippings and photos) make this one of those reads in which you discover something new each time you leaf through it!
Look! Seeing the Light in Art Gillian Wolfe A great cross-section of art adorns the pages of this book. Focusing on the different uses of light - dramatic, dappled, textured, mysterious - lets the reader get an introduction to great works of art as well as the various moods that can be induced by using light in different ways. This book contains a guide to the famous works of art contained within.
Cool Stuff 2.0 : and How it Works Chris Woodford Incredibly up-to-date and absolutely bursting with information, this weighty book gives overviews of how everyday (and some not-so-everyday) gadgets work. Find out how Lego Mindstorms work, get inside a mouse (the computer kind!), and learn about the science behind jet skis. Very browsable and sure to generate interest in science and technology.
Marie Curie Kathleen Krull She risked her life for science and won not just one but two Nobel Prizes. Marie Curie shattered the "no girls allowed" world of nineteenth-century science. This penetrating portrait of a singular genius shows the life of Madame Curie as a passionate and patient individual.
Junk Man's Daughter Sonia Levitin They say that in America, the streets are made of gold! When Hannah and her family leave the old country and settle in the New World, she discovers that things aren't quite as easy as all that - her mother and father are kept working all day and night just to make enough money to survive. Then one day Hannah sees something glittering in the sunlight- could it be the gold they were looking for? This book is a great immigrant's story that shows that with plenty of hard work and a little bit of luck, the sky's the limit.
If I Ran for President If I Were President Catherine Stier What would happen if you ran for president? What would happen if you won? Told from a kid's point of view, these books walk you through the process - you'd need lots of support from friends, you'd have to be polite and willing to work hard. Fun introductions to the political process.
Artful Reading Bob Raczka In this beautiful picture book, readers and art lovers are encouraged to enjoy a book in a variety of ways. Reproductions of paintings by many famous artists (Vermeer, Rembrandt, Van Gogh and more) show people in many situations - all of them reading! A guide to the artists and pictures is included. A great book for art lovers and anyone who loves a good book!
Satchel Paige : Striking Out Jim Crow James Sturm Leroy "Satchel" Paige began his baseball career in the Negro Leagues in Alabama in the 1920s. Jim Crow laws had kept him out of the major leagues, but they couldn't stop him from becoming a world-class athlete, who Joe DiMaggio described as "the best and fastest pitcher I've ever faced." This graphic novel-type book is told in mostly first-person narratives. Located in the J Illustrated section.
Math Adventures Series Each of these books covers many math-related topics, from addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, to taking measurements and learning concepts of time, to reading graphs and charts. Kids/readers are placed in the shoes of scientists ("you find a dinosaur bone" or "you look outside your space rocket window") and given math puzzles and common sense questions to answer. Each book includes helpful hints/ answers in the back.
Art Off the Wall Series Explore all aspects of each type of art! Design and Technical Art shows ideas for lots of everyday items such as chairs, planes, cars, and even Coke bottles, and then describes steps that designers need to take to get to a finished project. Illusion Art teaches students about concepts such as foreshortening and perspective, and invites them to enjoy examples of trompe l'oeil and anamorphs.
